Farmer Elsie de Koo's Problem

PRINT THIS PAGE

Below are results from bacterial cultures taken from Farmer Elsie de Koo's herd:

Bulk tank culture results :

Large numbers of Streptococcus agalactiae isolated. Small numbers of Staph. aureus isolated. No other remarkable findings.

Milk samples should be collected from the whole herd or from quarters of numerous cows with high CMT scores to determine the relative prevalence of Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus.

Results: Of 20 high CMT quarters from 20 cows, Streptococcus agalactiae was isolated from 17. Three had no growth. Four of the quarters had Staph. aureus in addition to Strep. agalactiae.

Streptococcus agalactiae found in milk of high CMT quarters is indicative of what type of mastitis ? Are there any characteristics of mastitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae that give you a hint as to how this problem occurred?
